Welcome to UU Galveston!

Visitors and residents alike are all welcome to UU Galveston. We are a community with a wide diversity of backgrounds. Members and friends of the congregation include believers and non-believers from a variety of backgrounds, all seeking to develop their own theological grounding.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • We are a pluralistic faith which believes in the worth and dignity of every person and a free and responsible search for truth and meaning. We believe in service, community, and love. Learn More>

  • The short answer is some of us are, or used to be. Members are also agnostic, atheist, Buddhist, Jewish or a combination of things. Our roots are in the Judeo-Christian tradition.

  • The service normally consists of opening words, hymns, instrumental music, readings, a sermon, and an offering. We are a “lay-led” congregation and do not have a permanent minister. The speaker on any given Sunday may be a visiting minister from a UU or other faith tradition, a member of our congregation, or a member of the community.

You may sit anywhere you like in the worship space. Towards the beginning of the service, we’ll ask if we have any visitors. If you are comfortable, you may choose to stand and give your name and where you are from, but that is optional.

  • Unitarian Universalists welcome others wishing to join our faith and congregation, but you will not be pressured. Some long-time attendees prefer to be “friends.” The only difference is that friends can’t vote at congregational meetings.

Feel free to attend a newcomer’s meeting (held once a month) or join us for a post-service lunch at Russo’s (your church bulletin is your ticket to a free lunch) or our end-of-the-month potluck to get to know us and ask questions. One of our Membership Committee folks would always be happy to talk with you individually.

  • Arriving a few minutes before the 10:30 a.m. service will give you time to get comfortable before service begins. Children are welcome to remain in the sanctuary during the service. If your child becomes restless, you may choose to sit with them in the children’s playroom, where you will still be able to listen to the service.

  • Our main entrance is on 5th Street. Limited parking is available on the street around the Fellowship. We also have permission to park in the Credit Union parking lot across the street.

  • As you enter, you will be welcomed by a member of the congregation, offered a name tag, and provided with an order of service. The greeter will be able to answer any questions you might have. Before services, you’re welcome to join us in our “living room” for coffee; just ask the greeter where that is. Sign up for our newsletter>

  • Children are welcome and may sit in the service with you. We have a limited number of child care volunteers, so child care during service is not guaranteed.

We welcome all to join us!
